@csawCowboys no dude u do not have to touch ur chest. for a max out yes but if u are just doing half reps u will be fine because half reps stress your pecs out more :p

@Highway420Music wtf are you talking about they lift weights to get stronger thats the whole point of lifting weights and do you follow them around and check on how they work out. what fighter says lifting heavy weights is bad, every single sport in the world requires you to have muscles to be the best. my point is that you dont know what your talking about your a GOOF

im pretty sure you must touch your chest when you bench…

@Highway420Music what you are saying is right, but you also have to remember that MMA training takes A LOT out of a person, it’s not like you can do 4 hours of bjj, muay thai, wrestling a day and then go to the gym and max out on your lifts. from my experience it’s very hard to train 5 times a week and then go to the gym and actually do heavy lifting more than once or twice. granted I’m not even an amateur fighter or anything close to that. plus you have to cut 20-30 lbs and then build it up

@Highway420Music i get what ur saying but people are getting pissed cause gsp is known to be a physical speciman and one of the strongest p4p fighters. if you want to look at weaker fighters juss check bj.

@CPThustla88 You have no fucking idea what your talking about, gsp do not squat 650 pounds, not even close

@samanmm i hear ya dude, but pudzianowski is no mma guy. i saw that fight, and he hardly even threw a punch or kick. he thought he could win by pushing sylvia around the cage, while sylvia peppered him. i’m talking about mma guys doing heavy weight. i agree that you need fantastic endurance, but i don’t see how that means to stay away from pure strength lifting. a good mma fighter WILL know how to use his strength.

plus, he is mainly trying to maintain his condition, keeping his heart rate elevated, so he does these supersets. If he were to start benching 225 lbs and squating 250lbs etc., he will start to gain to much weight in muscle size, therefore disqualifying him from his weight class of 170lbs. its not all about lifting heavy.

    July 27th, 2010 @ 4:22 pm

A big reason he does not lift heavy is because he will gain to much muscle and will weigh too much for his weight division. Also like he states in the video he does not want to risk injuring himself without a partner to spot him.

@Highway420Music yeah watch Pudzianowski versus Sylvia, he gets absolutely owned by a washed up fighter like Sylvia and that’s supposedly the strongest man in the world. Almost all the fighters lift weights, but they do more explosive movements, those are the muscles useful in fighting. In the end it does not really matter how strong you are if 1) you don’t have the lungs 2) dont know how to use your strength.

guys, my whole point is, do these guys ever come up against anyone who is really strong? even big guys like lesnar train with really light weights. i think it’s a mistake. they don’t lift for strength. i definitely would not believe gsp could even squat a regulation 315 unless i saw it. plenty of guys claim a big bench or squat, but then you see them doing only quarter reps. someday, mma guys will learn that heavy lifting is good for mma, not bad.

@samanmm haha iknow ppl brag about how much they can lift because they are insecure about themself, they know gsp can kick their ass they say they can lift more to make them look good because they don’t believe in themselves

  16. samanmm
    July 27th, 2010 @ 7:09 pm

lol at people saying they can lift more, so fucking what?

if it comes down to it, he can kill you in under 3 minutes, then you can do some heavy lifting in your coffin.

@MrAbcabccbacba i think you should get the nobel prize for that one… obvs the camera guy isn’t going to help spot him because he’s holding to camera… if he wanted that person to spot him, he wouldn’t be trying to make this video. stop asking dumb questions and enjoy the video

  18. bmorrisseau24
    July 27th, 2010 @ 8:22 pm

@Highway420Music how does that to you mean he always goes light..? he obviously uses heavier weights when he does the actual work out. i’m sure heavy for gsp is more than what the average person works out with. you sound really conceded and ignorant

Kosh is gonna beat his ass

  20. CPThustla88
    July 27th, 2010 @ 8:50 pm

@Highway420Music gsp squats 650 pounds and only is about 190. is that weak. alot of mma fighters r week but not gsp

  21. CPThustla88
    July 27th, 2010 @ 9:19 pm

@100isthebest u clearly kno jack shit about mma. gsp is biult outta stone and is one of the p4p strongest fighters there is. bj is way smaller and lifts the same weights i do and im 17 and 160 pounds. bj is more natural talented but gsp is wayway stronger and dats why he won

  22. 100isthebest
    July 27th, 2010 @ 9:51 pm

I bet BJ Penn lifts more weight than GSP. But anyway who cares about weight lifting, this is MMA and GSP is tough fighter.

  23. Highway420Music
    July 27th, 2010 @ 10:12 pm

it’s surprising how little pro mma guys know about strength. if i could coach a few of these guys on how to get strong, i could change the entire sport. i’m not kidding. and i’m not talking about the weight he’s using because he said he’s going light to show the exercise. but this to me means he always goes light. what’s this guy’s idea of heavy? weaklings, all!
